Future Projects

Restoration of the fabric of a Grade 1 listed building is constant and expensive. A building mainly of sandstone sitting on the seafront of the North East coast suffers a high level of erosion. So not only the stonework requires regular repair, so does the Victorian glass through the failure of the weakened stonework to support it.

For the past few years fundraising has gathered pace with the requirement to find over £250,000 to repair the stonework and repair the lead holding the Great West Windows in place. Movement of the whole infrastructure in strong winds is a cause of high concern.

Other areas of concern include the safety of the bells in the Tower. The Bell Frame is fragile and the bells need lowering onto a stronger platform with new stairways for the safety of those needing access to the area. Costs of this work would be in the region of £140,000.

The Parish Church Council is currently working towards seeking Grant Aid but The Friends of St George's are working in partnership raising funds and providing a high guarantee of financial support to assist in the grant aid claim.
